Umbrella swords

I went to see Toy Story 3 a few days ago with my mum and stepdad, and because of the rain, we all had umbrellas with us. I’m not the kind of person who would think to use an umbrella ordinarily; my scatty pinball-machine brain, though not as bouncy as Tom’s, still leaves me with the lack of forethought one would need to think of using an item like an umbrella. (It’s also the reason the canvas bag Kristina gave me for shopping is always sitting unused in my cupboard, while I silently curse myself in the supermarket for leaving it there AGAIN.)

Anyway, when we moved into our flat, it came fully furnished, which included sofas and beds and towels and cupboards and a toaster and a microwave – all the things you’d need (except a kettle, for some reason – bracket slash digress). And this surplus of supplies included umbrellas. Several of them. At least six. So I distributed them amongst my family and away we went.

And this is where we got into trouble, because as we left the flat, it became obvious that the rain had ceased. So what now? What happens when you have an umbrella and there’s no rain?

Short answer: you carry it with you, closed.

Long answer: you have more fun than you’ve ever had with an umbrella. I submit to you that umbrellas are actually at their most useless when shielding you from the rain. Sure, you can be “practical” with it, but that doesn’t compare to prodding your mother in the back to make her walk faster, and leaning on it like a pimp cane, and twirling it around like a baton, and walking with it in your arms like you’re holding a rifle and pretending you’re a Stormtrooper walking Chewbacca around the Death Star. And HOLDING IT BY YOUR SIDE LIKE A SWORD. I love life.

Thank you to everybody who came to our show last night. It was our best show yet :D Here are some of you:

There were over 400 people in the main room, and even more than that still queueing out the door to get in when we started playing. I was totally blown away by the sheer number of you and can only attribute it to the rarity of having John Green in Europe :p When we weren’t playing, we ran upstairs and played an acoustic show for the people who couldn’t get in, and then ran back downstairs again to finish our set :)

So thank you guys so much for coming. We impressed a lot of people last night <3 I can't wait to see you all at the next show, whenever it happens - it was such a blast.

I'll be in Zambia for the next two weeks so keep watching my YouTube videos to find out what my life’s like over there, and we’ll talk again when I get back!

I live in southern california, so I've never really been in need of an umbrella. and I've also never wanted one as much as at this moment xD. imagining you using one as a pimp cane and to pretend you're a storm trooper just made me really smile due to the sheer awesomeness of it. and I needed that, as I had a really crappy night. thank you :)
on the other note, you have no idea how much I wish I could have been there for the SoA show and to see John. I can only imagine at this point the sheer epicness of it, but hopefully I'll be able to see some video footage of it soon. :)
    cheers!

  • Tragiccaseofmyreality

I just used sheer twice in a row didn't I? crap. I hate when I do that. oh well, it's 4:45am right now where I am and I've yet to sleep so I hope that makes my lack of a diverse diction for the moment at least a little understandable haha

  • Sairs1111

It looks like ur arm is pink
    :)

  • Maus

I will never think my umbrella a bulky annoyance when it fails to rain again.

  • Mia

Uses for an unberella other than as a 'shield from the rain':
    - Pretending you are Mary Poppins.
    - A tent. (I used to do this when I was very young. It was so much fun,)
    - Lightsaber
    - Parachute

What other things could you use an umberella for???

  • http://twitter.com/SkyeHandley Skye Handley

The fun is in retractable umbrellas. I menace people with mine as though it were a gun. No one takes the threat seriously until, BOOM, umbrella to the face.

  • Mia

DAMN. I type umberella wrong….Please Ignore

  • RawrxD6

That gig yesterday was /the best/ gig ever. <3

  • xoalypallyox

Ahhh I'm so jealous of you all. It's so restricting living in America. And depressing. Because all of my favorite people aren't so much as on the same continent. Congrats with your turn out Alex :)

  • Alice

Wasn't that Charlie McDonnell that did the wine gum video? Or did Alex do one two and I just missed it.

  • Courteneysomething

LOL! =D Umbrellas rock. =DD I like to pretend to be Mary Poppins with my.. O_O…Okayyy.

The school I'm going to start teaching at just gave me an umbrella. Conclusion – they want me to take on the students (who will wield rulers, no doubt. Advantage: ME!)

  • Amyy:)

    BEST GIG EVER:')
and i'm glad someone shares my passion for prodding people with umbrellas, my friends didnt seem to like it.. o.O

Oh dear. I live on the wrong side of the pond. Clearly.

Did you like Toy Story 3, Alex?

  • itsabbiee

poking people with umbrellas= lots of fun :D
also, me and my sister would use them as lightsabers, but this actually left me with a broken umbrella, which probably symbolises that I lost x__x

  • http://twitter.com/zephitheguy Joseph Ansbridge

Due to my incredible bad luck I couldn't make it. As you can imagine I found this quite upsetting. Maybe next time will find me more fortunate, and, if so, I look forward to seeing you.

P.S I once hollowed out a particularly thick umbrella to insert a spring mechanism and a smaller umbrella. That was a fun day in the town center, I can tell you :)

  • Reema

And you typed it wrong again: Umbrella. :)

  • Christina

I had so much fun last night! You did a fantastic job <33

  • Theo

When we weren’t playing, we ran upstairs and played an acoustic show for the people who couldn’t get in, and then ran back downstairs again to finish our set :)”

Yeah, and you left your guitar upstairs :P ALEX!

    Loved the show btw :)

Alex did a video displaying a dissapointment in not getting an evenly distributed amount of wine gums, Charlie went on to do a video testing the distribution of said wine gums.

So Alex's video came first! :)

  • Heylove27

    Dearest Alex, =)
I just wanted to let you know you were absolutely extraordinary at the show last night (my sister and I actually flew in from America haha). I give you my sincerest thanks for all you do to entertain your fans – I'm very grateful to have found someone whose music and personality I admire greatly. In gratitude and safe trip wishes, Amanda x

You could hide your wand inside. But, of course, that would make you like Lucius Malfoy, so…

  • Chandni

OMG i do that with umbrellas too.
apart from the pimp stick thing :L
if you have a good imagination, use the umbrella as a missile.
just start throwing it at people you love.
    its brilliant :D
    lol.
    xx

That umbrella thing happened to me once, my roommate and I decided to walk in the rain, only there was no rain, So, naturally, we started playing with our umbrellas, sword fighting, twirling, jumping off of benches, pretty much everything we could think of doing with our umbrellas. More friends showed up and joined in our fun. thanks to the brilliance of having a camera attached to my belt loop all the time, we got the best pictures ever and had a wonderful afternoon :D

Last night was amazing. I had no idea there were so many awesome people in England. It was like VidCon all over again. Also, ICE FATHER NATION <3

  • Amy C

You can see me in my white hat in the bottom right-hand corner! It had 117% Complete badges on!
Thank you, Alex, for signing that hat for me!! :D

  • dani

you guys are so, so, so amazing for doing the acoustic gig for us. Honestly, I'm not even sure my night could've gone any better if I HAD gotten in to the main venue. :')

  • http://twitter.com/MattieBoosh Mattie Turner

Thats ME! In the Green! D.F.T.BA say DFTBA – Mattie Boosh (Alex/Ed/Tom/John's Official Cheerleader) :P

  • Ansley

REALLY wish I could have been at your show but I live too far away. :( And yeah umbrellas are good times. I used to make my mother mad by taking them in the car and opening them to make mini forts. lol

  • Ansley

the spring loaded ones are the best!! :D

  • ChelseaIRL

you prodded your mom in the back? aw! poor Alex's mom!
all i can say is, if you saw a girl with blue hair, you should have been extra nice to her. cuz she's Charlie, and she's awesome! :)
still jealous and wishing i was in England. (you can probably cut and paste this line into every comment i make until next year when i'm finally there again. XD)
    Zambia? fascinating.
off to read BEDA blogs! *meanders off into the internets*

  • ChelseaIRL

ha! i'm from SoCal and hate using the same words twice in one comment as well! XD

  • ChelseaIRL

charli… as in Charlie Edge??? if so, hi!!!! <3

if not, also hi! nice to meet you! XD

  • ChelseaIRL

i think all gatherings are going to be compared to VidCon from now on, aren't they? i always feel bad when i do it now around my friends who didn't go, cuz i imagine they must be sick of hearing about this super-awesome thing they didn't go to. :/
btw, start saving now cuz there WILL be a 2011 in LA! :)
(i bought the “Insider” track, so i got an email from Hank announcing it. :D)

  • Mortadelle

May Zambia (and the flights) be nice to you :)

  • Jasmine

trip someone while there walking put it in front of them!^-^
Try to stick it in your mouth… hard.
    Knight someone!
Act like a old person with a humpback.(Is that the word???0-0)

Have fun in Africa, Lord Alex Day!!!

  • Mia

    I knew it looked wrong… Thanks ;D

  • Mia

  • Harry

The next show? There will be a next show? :D

  • http://twitter.com/alissadale Alissa Dale

Can't help but notice the high proportion of females in that audience…

  • lovexisxlikexfire

duuuude that was an epic night! thanks for that :D oh and i was the girl that got on stage for “girl can't dance”. you know, the one who triped over all the wires and got her waistcoat caught on edds mic stand? lol yeah that one!
    Umbrellas RULE!
    much love
    xox

  • Mktaylor

As one of the oldest people at the show, I'd like to say what a great show and what a fabulous audience. I didn't get on the stage like my daughter, I was at the back with your mum, a lovely lady.
I had an wonderful time, I'd forgotten what great live performance is about.

  • SageKiller

One of my prized possesions is a bright yellow duck umbrella that I carry around if it looks like there's even a chance of rain so I totally agree with the fun in finding weird ways to use it closed XD

  • Jonah Dichtel

I really wish i could see you live. =/ But i live in the US. and i don't have the money to do so. =[

  • Tria

Nooooooo the speaker blocks me in that photo :(

And me and umbrellas is an interesting thing. I bought my current umbrella in the desert. To this day I still wonder why they were selling them there.

  • awesomefrankie
