Epigrams, Charts and Jack

Hey guys! I’m at number 4 in the Official UK Charts right now:

This week has been an incredible success :) Here are some Forever Day stats:
-After ten minutes: #ForeverDay second highest worldwide Twitter trend, Forever Yours sixth
-After two hours: Broke the iTunes Top 100 in the UK, Ireland, Sweden, New Zealand, Australia, Canada
-After eight hours: broke the iTunes Top 40 in the UK
-After nine hours: broke the Top 20, overtaking Adele, then One Direction and then JUSTIN FUCKING BIEBER
-After twelve hours: broke the Top 5
-After thirteen hours: broke the iTunes Top 100 in America
-After fourteen hours: Forever Yours was simultaneously in the top ten, twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, sixty, seventy and eighty ALL AT ONCE on the iTunes chart with all its different versions – we had four songs in the Top 40, three songs in the Top 25, two in the Top 20.
-After nineteen hours: We were #4 on the Big Top 40 chart, broadcasting to 2.5 million people worldwide in the UK.

The rest of the week took hold of itself and rolled us forwards and now here we are, in the UK Top 5 on Christmas Day, with no label :) So I thought I’d talk a bit about my plans and stuff.

First – as a Christmas present and as a thank you for all the support you guys have given me this week, I’ve posted a song up on Bandcamp for free called Jack & Coke:

Jack & Coke was the first song I produced myself (Forever Yours was the third), so it’s a little raw, but I really like it and I hope you guys will too! Click the artwork above to download it or just click right here.

Second – yes, record labels are in touch. Polydor, Island, Sony and EMI. I’ll be completely transparent with you about whether anything happens with them, but so far I’m not convinced I’ll be able to find a label deal that’s fair on me as well as them (which is as much my fault for being picky as it is theirs). I’m going in with an open mind, anyway; it’s fair to hear what they have to say.

Third – at the moment, Epigrams And Interludes (my third album) is being held back because I’m focusing on things song-by-song. I think singles are clearly the future, when you can buy any song on iTunes as an individual track anyway, and it means every song can be a big event with its own music video and its own release, instead of being bundled in with an album. So the plan is to keep releasing singles through 2012 and release an album at the end of it with those four or five songs on, plus some new tracks. In short, yes, Forever Yours is the first single from my third album, but you’ll hear several more before you get the CD.

Cheers guys <3 Best Christmas ever!
x

oh snap. i was just listening to forever yours on repeat and i realized
what if the song is about getting to #1 on christmas day?

“remember the time that we stole the whole day”
    and all that

dang i feel like i discovered jesus

  • Elizabeth Creaghan

Well done you! I remember the Christmas you filmed a video in empty London. This one must have been quite different. Very very big congratulations. We (Hazel and I) now own all the Sopio decks (except for one booster pack I think) and we’re looking forward to playing it with the extended family tomorrow.

wow :’) congratulations Alex! have a good Christmas x

  • Zara

I don’t want to take anything away from your success, I think you’ve accomplished something amazing, but I would have really got behind the campaign to make Jack & Coke xmas number 1. I bought a couple of Forever Yours remixes to do my little bit to help you in the charts, but I wasn’t totally enthusiastic about the song. I think J&C is far and away the superior pop record.

Anyway that’s my 2 cents, for what its worth.
Well done mate, you done good. Merry Christmas.

Congratulations! Jack and Coke is amazing and so is Forever Yours! The new album will be EPIC.

  • Kate

    Congratulations Alex!
My sister and I convinced two of our friends to have a listen to your song. They especially enjoyed the vocal remix! What was amazing was that when we stopped the video, we could hear Forever Yours coming from her brothers room too! He listened to every single version while we were there, including Charlie’s version (we thought it was him singing it at first!)

  • izzy xx

well done alex, so proud of you, you really deserve it :) xx

  • HarmoniousEyes

    YAY BEST CHRISTMAS WOOOH.  8DD
Definitely had a moment when Forever Yours was played on the radio.  And all I did was write a few letters and emails and buy the song (plus a few remixes).  So can’t even imagine what you’re feeling!  So proud of you.

  • Kye

I think that Jack & Coke is one of your best songs; It’s amazing. :)

  • RubyConverse

Happy Christmas, Alex! You totally deserve it! xD

  • Rose

YAH Alex beat coldplay! I’d go with EMI because they’re responsible for all the Gorillaz videos which are aboslutely fantastic! =D

  • Zoey

Remember when Charlie was eating baby food and when he got to “Grandpa’s Sunday Brunch” he said he would go in with an open mind? … That didn’t work…

Any chance of getting lyrics and/or chords to Jack & Coke? I reallly like it.

The artwork that showed up when I first played Jack & Coke was the artwork for Paradise. Irony at it’s finest!

  • Anonymous

I’ve never been fond of singles, the first time I ever brought any was to support Forever Yours reaching the charts, I think I’ll have to wait till there’s a CD then.
I’m a very physical copy kinda person :)

  • Atelat

‘world wide in the UK’ haha good job

  • Holly

congratulations Alex! you seriously deserved to do so well in the charts, as not only was it a great song (one of my favourites from you) but it was also for such a great, genuine cause :)

I also love the new song ‘Jack & Coke’, i find myself humming the tune without realising already!
Just wondering if you’re going to release the second ever song that you produced yourself (as you mentioned this was your first and ‘Forever Yours’ was the third – unless I’m being really stupid and you’ve already told us what he second us) or will it be put on your third album?

Cannot wait to hear the stuff you’ll be releaing in 2012 :)  xx

  • Lian Meacco

I love this new song Alex! It’s so catchy :)
Congratulations for Forever Yours’ success from down here in Australia. You really deserved this – “and it will be forever yours” <3 x

  • Jenna

I agree actually, after having heard the song. As much as I love Forever Yours I do prefer J&C. However I think Forever Yours is…catchier? So for the purpose of getting in the charts somehow I feel like J&C wouldn’t have been as successful anyway.
I don’t know, I’m not much of a music analyzer or anything.
    Happy Boxing Day

Would you want to do an AMA on Reddit? I’m sure we’d love to have you!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge fan of Alex and I think Jack and Coke is a great song, but I still feel not all of it was up to the production standard it can be, i.e. harmonies on the last chorus felt spontaneous and didn’t seem to fit in, occasionally poor choices of instrumentation (the chorus could have been done better) and sometimes unclear diction. I just feel to make it a better song (and definitely if it were to be released as one of his singles it would need a touch up. Because it’s nearly there and definitely has the potential.

If anyone deserves this, it’s you. Well done<3

Alex… I have a question. Who is Forever Yours aimed at? Just the video and the interviews and the lyrics all seem to point to Charlie, but I was stopped by the extra lines in the guitar acoustic version – ‘It would never work between us, never work between us, and I’m glad we got that straight’ – and I’m purely curious. If you reply to this, I thank you in advance, and if you even see this, just know that I am only curious and no intrusions of privacy are intended. You did say on radio 1 that the song was inspired by a good time you had with a friend recently, and I thought that that would remain the same throughout. Thank you :’)

  • http://twitter.com/Honor_Louisee Honor Louise

Yeah well I thought it was about him realising he could never get with Charlie hahaha (Finally accepting that, and in the guitar acoustic version, it would never work between us, never work between us and I’m glad we got that straight)

  • Sammy

Jack and Coke is brilliant, I can’t believe it’s the first song you produced yourself. Thank you. I shall cherish this Christmas present.

Congratulations, Alex! We helped you because you’re awesome, and because we all believe that you deserve whatever success you seek. I’m about to listen to Jack and Coke, and I’m sure I’ll love it as much as I love your other music. :-)
