Mania

by Alex on December 13, 2009

Faithful readers of my blog; the evening of Saturday December 12th was the best night of my life. <3

I’m going to try and be brief, because I’m still in New York and I like it here and don’t want to be on my computer, but here are some sexy briefs to give you an idea of my night:

We left the hostel for the gig, in a taxi, and as it pulled away the driver said “where to?” Charlie, Tom, Ed and myself all looked at each other, and it became clear that none of us knew what the address was. So that delayed us somewhat.

When we finally arrived, we were greeted by Liane from the fiveawesomegirls, and I saw Sam Friedman, and then there were PEOPLE. SO MANY PEOPLE. We walked in. People squealed. As we walked through the crowd, one of them thrust a copy of New Moon into my hands and said “you can keep that!” Throughout the night I also got given a K9 Christmas card, several handmade bracelets, a letter, and a banana with a girl’s phone number on it. Definitely the most inventive way of being given a phone number I’ve ever experienced. It’s also the first time I’ve ever been given a gift with a shelf life.

The people. Oh, the beautiful beautiful people. I didn’t get to speak to them personally but Greg Holden and Maureen Johnson were both there, I saw them in the crowd, but thought it best not to say “LOOK! MAUREEN JOHNSON! EVERYONE LOOK!” And the crowd, oh my goodness. It’s the best show I’ve ever played by about a million times. Everyone was so excited, and so pretty, and everyone had fun things to say. I specifically remember Olivia, and Camille, both of which should definitely message me on YouTube so that I can personally tell them how amazing they are. (And no fakers. I remember what they were both wearing. There will be tests. =p) And MELISSA, who it turns out is my biggest fan. So if I ever meet anyone who claims to be my biggest fan, I can say “NO YOU’RE NOT! I’VE MET HER! HER NAME IS MELISSA!” This girl had my song lyrics written all over her ‘pants’ (by which I mean trousers).

The gig was so fun. We were all so high energy. Tom started his set with Porphyrophobia and Indigo, and it was just fantastic. Ed got a great response for all his songs. I got to finish my set by saying “thank you New York”, thus living a dream right there. People keep saying to me “these big crowds of YouTube girls all there for you, I suppose you get used to it” – I DON’T GET USED TO IT. The gleeful expression mounted on my face for the entirety of last night is proof of this.

And then, before his last song … Tom drags Charlie on stage. Charlie didn’t know this would happen. Nobody did. Charlie, put on the spot, plays Acne Song, culminating in a lengthy improvised version of his crazy mouth scat section. It left me crying with laughter. The crowd went CRAZY. It was incredible. Everyone was incredible. Ahhhhhhh <33

I SOLD OUT OF EVERYTHING. Chameleon Circuit, Parrot Stories, ALL OF IT.

And then, after being mobbed by people (including the aforementioned Camille and Olivia), we staggered home to the hostel bed. Charlie and I were shattered. Everyone else except us and Melody went out for pizza. Charlie went straight to sleep, Melody and I chatted for ages and then fell asleep.

When I woke up, I saw Tom in the bed opposite me, and in his half-asleep stupor, he reached out and grabbed this cuddly penguin he has, and curled up with it. :D

I'm slightly disappointed as your declaration of 'having sexy briefs' led me to believe you were talking about something else.

Becky December 13, 2009 at 10:37 am

tessssss December 13, 2009 at 10:53 am

OMG it was the best night of my life too! You were so nice to me and my friend when we asked to buy cds because we were leaving early. Which made me really sad, because I wanted to stay so badly!

I hope you like the bracelet I made you and thank you for signing our iPods!!!!!

Bridget (: December 13, 2009 at 11:04 am

Simon Ørberg December 13, 2009 at 11:09 am

I hate myself for not being there. Sounds like the best gig ever :D.
I'm glad you all had an enjoyable time!

fiveafterseven December 13, 2009 at 11:15 am

I am thrillled that your night was so great! I hope that someday I get to see you perform in the meet world. As soon as I get my passport I'll be at a show. Hope that the rest of your time in New York is wonderful.

SheIsBrighter December 13, 2009 at 11:17 am

It's so horrible to live in Belgium xD You should do a huge Europe-tour xD
I would have loved to see Charlie do the Acne Song!

Jacqui December 13, 2009 at 11:40 am

Alex!! :waves: Hi, I was at the show last night too! I hope it's alright, but I'd like to message you as well because you're completely made of awesome. I wanted to say thank you for leaving my voicemail message, I've already listened to it about 5 times already (grinning every time) playing it for friends and my sister. I was woken up today from a phone call from my friend Corrine (who was there last night, but she didn't get to see you because she was actually talking Dr. Who with the Olivia that you mentioned, HER PLAYING CARDS ARE BEASTLY!) but Corrine wanted to listen to the message you left again, so it brings happiness to all of my friends as well. Thanks heaps!! The show was brilliant and I also had the night of my life.

(P.S. Awe Tom's cuddly penguin!! xD)

emmachupein December 13, 2009 at 12:09 pm

ha, wow alex xD that was sooooo awesome!
best night ever :]
you rock live (knew you would) and you were so smiley the entire night xD
thanks for tolerating me repeatedly searching for stuff to be signed, but i was in fangirl mode and thus couldn't help myself xD
And because I don't know how to end this I'll top it off with a general observation: you are taller than i thought you'd be
thanks for the hug!
kthxbai.

Kelsey December 13, 2009 at 12:30 pm

You should go skating in Rockefeller Center before you leave NYC! The crowds for it are insane though, so be warned.
And I loved the show last night! Everyone did a really great job. I hope you come back again soon!

SageKiller December 13, 2009 at 12:40 pm

The show last night was awesome!!! You guys were all great live, but you sold out of CDs so quickly!!! I'll have to buy one online now :( I'm glad you had fun too and all the insane girls didn't scare you away!

My wallet is now covered in awesome :D

Lewissssss December 13, 2009 at 12:48 pm

LOL <3

Molly E. December 13, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Man, that sounds AMAZING. Wish I could've been there to see it in person, but I have a feeling there will be plenty of clips going up on YouTube :)

I want to meet this Melissa girl and find out what makes her your biggest fan, besides the pants part. XD Like, could she spell your name backwards? Because, yeah, that'd put her pretty high up there. :O

CrazyCatChick December 13, 2009 at 1:14 pm

I'd love to come on a gig some time. But I don't see how I'm able to get to New York for example, with no money, underaged and from Finland. Congratulations me! :D
Never mind, I can listen to your songs all I like, and what other way is there to read this, oh so funny blog?

At least you have now one fan from Finland. I'm not going to say I'm the biggest fan, but I'm really glad you share your music with us. Hello, my name is Angelica.
Another thing I wanted to say was that I admire your bravery, and I'll use you as an encouraging example. Some day I'll publish my stuff, the world better brace itself.

Jamie (: December 13, 2009 at 1:46 pm

I can't believe I missed this!
Last night was my first time in NY, and when I read your blog a few weeks ago, I found it a really strange coincidence that we were going to be there the same time. Unfortunately, due to the fact that a) our bus left at 7 sharp and b) like you I could not remember the address or location of the show, I was kind of out of luck. ((I kept hoping that I'd randomly bump into you on the street though.)) I just recently discovered your music and your twilight videos (<3) and it really depresses me to think that I missed this great opportunity to meet you! What are the chances that a potential coincidental meeting will happen again?! (: Keep up the great work & the hilarious videos.

JuliaGray December 13, 2009 at 1:57 pm

I wish I could have been there! I live in Pennsylvania, and BEGGED my mom to let me go. But nooo, a Christmas Party hosted here was more important than letting me use the car. Rawr! I'm so glad it went well for you though! Reading the other comments makes me jealous… =P.
But needless to say, you need to come to the US again soon! (No way I'm missing it again!)

Please continue to be awesome!

Meeshellz(Michelle) December 13, 2009 at 2:05 pm

I'm glad your show went great! I wish I could've been there, alas, I'm all the way here on the West Coast in California. So I'm pretty sure you're next big gig over here should be at the House of Blues in Anaheim at Downtown Disney. That way you can perform your bit and then go to the Disney Store after to buy WALL-E things. It sounds quite perfect really.

taylor <3 December 13, 2009 at 2:38 pm

Aw :( i wish I could of gone,

itiselizabeth December 13, 2009 at 3:04 pm

I have your lyrics all over my table in my art studio space at Uni, surely that counts a little? Though it isn't quite pants.
There is something in the way you write this that makes me think of how amazing SitC was and multiplying that amazing amount of awesome by, say what, 42 and just being in awe.
I so wish that there was some way of being everywhere I want to be without costs.
SciFi has it all worked out :/
Tom and his penguin = <3

KillerKat December 13, 2009 at 3:16 pm

That show definitely was fantastic to say the least. I was even shocked at the amount of people there! It truly was a fantastic gig and it was so great to be there and finally hear everyone's songs live. …It didn't even matter that a few things were out of a tune for my favorite song, hah.

By the way, can I just say that meeting you (especially you, Alex!) was so unexpected and I can't express just how shocked I was at how NORMAL you all are. I mean, to be so big on youtube and travel to the states to play a show – none of you have a big head and are SUPREMELY down to the Earth. It was a breath of fresh air :) The friends I brought with me who had no clue who you were quite enjoyed themselves too, if that means anything! Thanks and I hope you enjoy yourselves in New York, despite the rain.

nerimonpants December 13, 2009 at 3:42 pm

hey alex,
not only was it the best night for you, but it was also the best night ever for myself and my friend jenny as well. it was the funnest (yes it's a word) time i have ever had at a concert, cause we actually got to like talk to you guys, and you signed like all my stuff, which was so nice. i just wanted to let you know, that you music is like so good, and so is tom's and ed's and even charlies acne song and abridged version of blink was amazing. there were so many fangirls there which was kind of overwhelming even for me (a huge fangirl) anyway, your coming to new york and playing last night was the highlight of my like…. month… lol…. sooo anyway have a safe flight home and come back to the US soon.
<3 YOUR BIGGEST FAN MELISSA (the girl with the nerimonpants)

melissa =p December 13, 2009 at 4:34 pm

omg u made my day for the second time, that is extremely hard to do. lol u mentioned mi banana lol (btw im not like an imposter i can prove its my banana) haha thank you soo much <33 keep playing awsomely and enjoy NY

Shaina December 13, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Ahh! I wanted to be there so bad! :[
You should come down south so that my friends and I can come to a show and be all fangirly so you can be not-used to it. :]
It sounds like you had an amazing night. :D

Elinious December 13, 2009 at 5:33 pm

Too bad I live in Holland :( I had a…. very confusing weekend (boys…). I'd have much rather gone and seen you, Tom, Charlie and Ed at the gig.

It sounds like it was awesome <3
Have fun in New York!

(Tom and penguin = cute)

Lianaa December 13, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Hahaha I'm glad you liked our banana Alex:]
You were phenomenal!
Enjoy the rest of your time in New York:D

Steph December 13, 2009 at 5:43 pm

Alex, Tom, Ed, and Charlie thanks for the coolest night ever…..loved when you played Hearts. I still cant believe Charlie played, for the very first time, and I part of it. Brilliant!:D
I hope you are enjoying the city, after all we are the city that never sleeps so there is always something new to do.
Thanks (again)
X

Nyy December 13, 2009 at 5:57 pm

I had such a great time last night, it was AMAZING! I enjoyed every bit of the perfromance that all of you did. And I was excited that Charlie performed his Acne song and Blink. I couldn't stop recording on my camera because I wanted to save all the moments from beginning to end..but sadlly my camera died so I didn't get the opportunity to take a picture with you :(. This was the first ever gig I ever went to and I'm glad you were the first.

Thank you for giving me your autograph..I will post it right on my wall..along with charlies :D. I wish I could've engage in a conversation with you but I was so shy and nervous, oh well maybe next time when you do another gig in England or New York. I wish I can just bump into you in Manhattan and start chatting away lol (which will likely never happen). Oh by the way….you give really nice hugs!

Rebecca December 13, 2009 at 6:21 pm

That gig sounded absolutely amazing, and I really hope you do some more in the future because it would be awesome. I'm glad you had a good time, and the part about Tom's penguin made me smile xD

N <3 December 13, 2009 at 7:37 pm

Epic, purely epic :D

Christine December 13, 2009 at 7:43 pm

As much as I love Toronto, it's no New York.
It sounds like you had an amazing night, and congratulations on your success. I wish a million times that I could have been there singing along and seeing you and Tom and Ed and Charlie.

Natalie December 14, 2009 at 2:01 am

When are you Leaving?

Edward December 14, 2009 at 4:10 am

Alex, where are you staying? After you've finished staying there, obviously, otherwise strange internet people might come through your windows. It's just I'd really like to know some affordable accommodation in New York City for student who don't have an awful lot of money…

Sara December 14, 2009 at 4:54 am

Damn, I knew I should've saved my bet for tom. I bet my friends a dollar that I would introduce myself to someone by saying “hello my name is sara, I like penguins, and I feel as socially awkward as a giraffe in a roomful of midgets”. I said the second half to charlie but never said it in full, sadly I am one dollar poorer than before. If I had known that tom liked penguins enough to snuggle with them I would have used the intro and I could have won my dollar. Instead the poor boy had to witness me and friends tiny tea party, held on one of those little tables they put in boxes of pizza as he kept bringing things he was asked to sign over to our table. I felt so bad for him lol.

So sad I didn't get to met your biggest fan, she sounds brilliant. I did become friends with the girls who wrote the banana letters, they are brilliant and definitely deserve a call.

Mackenzie December 14, 2009 at 8:58 am

omg! i was there that night and it was amazing!! u guys are awesome! soooo happy i got ur cd but sad cuz i didnt get tom's new one.

Lily December 14, 2009 at 9:54 am

New York: Not Australia.
Fail.

Marisa December 14, 2009 at 12:04 pm

Did you get our yarmuclauses??

We gave them to Charlie. He seemed…confused…

Happy Christmukkah!

Bri :D December 14, 2009 at 1:14 pm

That was the best experience of my entire life. You guys were amazing. If it's not weird to say, you, Charlie, and Tom are the most beautiful people I have ever seen in my life. I am so mad I didn't get your CDs. WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM OUT ON THE PLANE?? If there was one more copy of parrot stories I would have got one. I brought a non-nerdfighter friend with me so I wouldn't have to be alone. She ended up buying all of your CDs and we had a fight over loves you more. She's a nerdfighter now. I think that's her comment above mine lol (mackenzie) >.< she beat me too it.

And, this Melissa girl is not your biggest fan. I could top that but I don't want to seem like a creeper. AND WHILE WERE ON THE TOPIC stop deleting the old Nerimon videos. I went to watch my favorite (the one about the tube) and it was gone. shame on you.

Katya December 14, 2009 at 4:24 pm

aw the penguin thing is so so sweet :)
i watched the videos of the songs on youtube. they were so good :D crowd seemed amazing, so loud, knew every single word lol. especially Charlie's surprise performance. LOL. so so jealous, want to be there <3

Beckii Cruel December 14, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Sounds fantastic! I wish I was there ^^ If yo find footage of it, make sure to link us <33

Emily December 14, 2009 at 6:19 pm

You should come up to Scotland and do a gig in Edinburgh or somewhere in Scotland, that would be awesome cause then i would come along and it would be totally amazing! :D please think about it :D Wooo! :-)

melissa =p December 14, 2009 at 7:08 pm

omg its mi new friend, lol btw its melissa one of the banana girls with the redish hair XD

Jessie December 14, 2009 at 7:52 pm

That sounds COMPLETELY amazing. I'm so jealous of everyone who went – I live in California :[ haha. Please come here sometime too!

Hey… I'll be your biggest fan once I become creative enough to think of something better to do. Which sounds impossible. Everyone sounds quite lovely :D

soiio December 14, 2009 at 8:14 pm

ohhh that sounds amazing!! I wish I could have been there too! Congrats on being awesome <3

Gillian December 14, 2009 at 10:31 pm

So, I was the one who wrote you that letter if you recall. Are you going to write me back? And do you still have the parrot whistle thing? And did Charlie keep Horatio? These are very important questions, friend. Please do tell me.

Gillian December 14, 2009 at 10:33 pm

So, I was in the fact the person who gave you that letter. I do hope that you liked it, even if it was a bit, dare I say, oversharing. Oh well, that's me. If you disliked it, I doubt you'll be a fan of me either. So, riddle me this: will you write back? Do you still have the parrot whistle thingymabobber? Did Charlie keep Horatio? These are burning questions, friend.

! December 15, 2009 at 11:45 am

yay! So how important did you feel getting a mention here? I feel like getting a note in alex days blog is the equal to a nerd as betting a mention in angelina jolies oscar speech is to a normal person

Rico December 15, 2009 at 8:47 pm

I so love this! You're great, I'm proud of you and wish I could have been there! xx

melissa =p December 15, 2009 at 8:50 pm

omg its better lol, i feel like a crazy fangirl but im honestly not creepy just happy, i wish i could b friends with everyone that performed, they all seem so kool

Catherine December 16, 2009 at 6:21 pm

“a banana with a girl’s phone number on it” That is not only practical but edible too. Sounds like you had an awesome time, the thrill of playing live would be brilliant.

Emily December 17, 2009 at 2:25 pm

I know this is a random comment but i dunno where else to put it as i don't have a youtube account, but i actually think your awesome and random and so cool :). I hope you have an awesome christmas and a happy new year to you. Alex Day you make my day :L i made it up all by myself. I bet its not the first time you've heard that. I hope you are okay, and i am getting your CD cause it is extremly awesome.
Love Emily xx
