Today, during the recording of Together Tonight, we (Tom) changed the rhythm of the song in its entirety, and almost all of the chords, and the melody. As a result of these changes, I re-wrote a lot of the lyrics to make the words fit the new sentiment, but I also wanted to ‘update’ the song, because a lot of what it was about is just past baggage that I don’t need to be singing about anymore, and I wanted it to feel a bit more hopeful.
It’s a really nice song now. It’s the same song it always was but we made a lot of great improvements today. I tried to hone in on that feeling of sadness you get when people just aren’t in your life anymore, and – for whatever reason, even if it’s your fault – you just want to take steps to bring them back.
