Is how long it took to record Dead And Gone. We made it sound exactly how I wanted it to; a classic old love song, like the Hello Dolly songs from the Wall-E soundtrack, or Elvis’s Love Me Tender. Just one vocal, one instrument, and some occasional other bits. It’s great :D
It’s about surviving with someone and knowing you’ve survived a lifetime’s worth of experience and you’re just ready to live out your days in contentment with someone else. I pictured my nan and grandad when I wrote it.
Take me home
The world is slightly colder now
Both of us are past our better days
Take my hand
And I will give myself to you
Pushing everything out of our way
There’s so much time but not enough for you and me to know
We’ll always find each other in the end
So for tonight, let’s sing about the ones we left behind
And I’ll run with you until we’re dead and gone
Hold me close
The bed is folded gently now
I’m leaving it to time to do the rest
One last word
Before I leave your memories
Don’t be sad cos I know I won’t be
Because we finished it so quickly, we went to the pub for a long lunch, and then when we got back we got two thirds of the way through Track 9, Stay With Me. So my thinking at the moment, if we start early and work hard, is that we can actually finish tracks 9 and 10 tomorrow (which are being mixed as a two-part finale to the album) and then we can have Friday off. This will be helpful both in that it gives me my first day off doing work in over a month, and that it means I don’t have to spend an unnecessary two hundred pounds on paying Oli and Tom for another day of their services. (I foolishly asked Alan how many copies of The World Is Mine I’ll have to sell in order to make back the money I’ve spent recording it; he said one thousand two hundred. Blebgbjyfhr)
