A press release went out today talking about the early success of my album - link (my friend Brent is helping me out with some PR work for this release to try and get some outside exposure to it).
What I wanna talk about is how I’m always referred to as ‘unsigned’. It might not be a big deal but, throughout this crazy year-and-a-half in the music industry I’ve constantly had people asking me if I’m signing to a label or whether I’m starting my own label or if I’m ‘remaining unsigned’, like those are the three options. I just don’t think that’s true anymore. Yesterday an article got written about me by a guy called James Altucher in which James said I ‘chose myself’ and I thought that was a really nice way of putting it. There doesn’t need to be a label, I don’t need to represent myself as Alex Day Records or whatever - I can just be me. I pay a company to put my music on iTunes and I keep the profits. I pay Ciaran as a cameraman to help me make music videos. I pay Oli to hire the studio for a day at a time to record songs. So I definitely have a ‘team’ of sorts but it’s not a label and I don’t like the promotion of that idea.
I don’t know. Maybe I’m just saying words into the wind. But this is my outlet and I wanted to let it out :)
